What is IELTS?

IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) is one of the most widely recognised English exams in the world. It is used for university study, professional registration, and for work or migration visas in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many other countries.

The test measures four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — and gives you a band score from 1 to 9 for each, plus an overall average. There is no pass or fail; you simply aim for the band your university or visa requires.

The four parts of the test

SkillWhat it testsRoughly
ListeningFour recordings, everyday and academic30 min
ReadingThree long texts with 40 questions60 min
WritingTwo tasks (a report/letter and an essay)60 min
SpeakingA face-to-face interview in three parts11-14 min

There are two versions: IELTS Academic (for university) and IELTS General Training (for work and migration). The Listening and Speaking sections are the same; the Reading and Writing differ.

How to prepare for IELTS

  • Know the format cold. On exam day, no part of the test should surprise you. Practise each section under real time limits.
  • Build your grammar and vocabulary first. A higher band comes from accurate, varied English — work through our verb tenses, modal verbs and vocabulary A-Z.
  • Read and listen to real English every day. News, podcasts, documentaries — the exam uses authentic language.
  • Practise speaking out loud. Record yourself answering common questions and listen back for fluency and pronunciation.
  • In Writing, answer the exact question and organise clearly — planning for two minutes saves you ten.

IELTS questions learners ask

What is a good IELTS score?

It depends on your goal. Many universities ask for an overall band of 6.0-7.0, and some professional or visa routes ask for 7.0 or higher. Check the exact requirement for your course or visa before you book.

How long does it take to improve by one band?

As a rough guide, moving up one whole band usually takes several months of steady, focused practice. Your real English level matters far more than exam tricks.

Is IELTS Academic or General Training right for me?

Choose Academic if you are applying to a university or a professional body. Choose General Training if the test is for work experience or a migration visa. Always confirm which one your institution accepts.
