What does ‘Intransitive’ mean?

Intransitive describes a verb that does not take a direct object. It is the opposite of transitive , which describes a verb that takes a direct object.

“The thief stole the money. Money is the direct object, so here stole is transitive”.
“The plane took off. No direct object, so here take off is intransitive”.
