S05: How to form and use mixed Second and Third Conditionals.

How To Form Mixed Second and Third Conditionals:

IF + SUBJECT + VERB IN PAST PERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE, THEN SUBJECT + VERB IN CONDITIONAL
Our past perfect subjunctive can either be simple or progressive. The past perfect subjunctive has exactly the same form as the past perfect. This we form by using: Subject + Had + Past Participle. I had eaten. If I had driven. Or Subject + Had + Been + Gerund. I had been eating. If I had been driving.
The conditional can be simple or continuous and is make by using: Subject + Would + Compliment of the verb. I would be. I would work. Or Subject + Would + Be + Gerund. I would be working. I would be sleeping.

Examples: If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor.
I would be rich, if I had invested in Microsoft.
If I had slept more last night, I would not be feeling sleepy.
If I hadn't been driving, we would all be lying in hospital right now.

When to use mixed Second and Third Conditionals:

This structure speculates about how the present or future would be if the past had been different. This purely is hypothetical as we cannot change the past, therefore we need a conditional to talk about how the changes in the present or future would be. It talks about how changes in the past might change the future. In effect this is the process of analysing our mistakes in the past, in order to avoid mistakes in the future.

Transcript:
Mixed second and Third conditionals: Third conditional, if I had studied, I would have passed. Second conditional, if I studied, I would pass. OK. SO a mixed second and third, if I had studied, I would pass my exams. So this is talking about if the past had been different, then the present or the future would be different. If I had worked hard, I would have money now. If the past had been different, if I had worked, then in the present I would have money. OK, so if plus past perfect subjunctive, same as past perfect, if I had worked, then I would verb, I would have. OK, that's a mixture of the third conditional, if I had ...er worked, and the second conditional, I would have, I would be. OK. If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now. So if the past had been different, if I had studied medicine, instead of what I studied, then now I would be a doctor. So, mixed third and second conditionals. If the past had been different, the present or future would be different. So, thanks for watching and I'll see you in another video. Bye for now.
